How It All Started

About Dino

The idea of starting a business importing exotic furniture had not even entered Dino Magnatta’s mind when he was travelling through Asia in 1998. Dino, the owner of two successful restaurants at the time was on a discovery tour of South East Asia visiting Laos, Thailand and Indonesia. Having a background in food and wine, Dino has always studied the foods of each country he ever visits. “I’ve always believed that the best way to know a culture is through the origins of its food and its influences.” Recalls Dino, who had always been fascinated with history, art and foods of the world.

Always being an avid collector of artifacts from his travels, Dino fell in love with craftsmanship expressed in the art and furniture he soon discovered in Bali and started buying for his personal collection. Dino soon realized that he wasn't able to carry it all back with him and had arranged to ship a 20' container which eventually ended up to 4 containers “I couldn't fit it all in my backpack so I decided to ship 4 X 40' containers..."

In the same year and upon his return, Dino Magnatta had to quickly find a location to unpack and store all the treasures that were soon to arrive in Toronto. Recognizing the vehicle traffic, Dino decided to turn his new warehouse located in the once Industrial area of Carlaw Ave south of the Riverdale area into his permanent retail location. Soon competitors and stores of similar style moved into the area and which is now coined as Asian Furniture alley.

Kuda opened a 2nd store in Vaughan Mills when the mall opened in 2004 and in 2005 moved both locations into its own building now located on Dufferin St. South of Queen street and just north of the up and coming Liberty Village.

After several months of renovation Kuda's new 20,000 square foot showroom showcases hand selected treasures from Indonesia, India, China, and Thailand. An unparalleled selection of handcrafted teak, mahogany, Indian rosewood, mango, Suar, Tamarind and Elm wood furniture makes Kuda Canada’s premier importer and largest retailer of exotic furniture and home accessories in Canada.

Relying on practical design, solid construction and authentic materials, Kuda has successfully captured the essence and deep History of time of the Far East and offers affordable furnishings that enhance and transform any traditional or modern settings.
